Mele Murals
Kamehameha Schools, Kanu O ka ‘Aina, Donkey Mill Art Center, Halau Kumana, 808 Urban, and Mana Maoli participated in the first Mele Murals pilot workshop at Fresh Cafe in Kakaako, Oahu. Guest kumus (teachers) were Meleana Meyer, Carl Pao, Lindsay Lander, John Prime Hina, Keola Nakanishi & Kanoa Castro. 25 students participated in this workshop.
This mural, titled E Ulu, tells of a sacred Ulu (breadfruit) tree that drips a sap that nourishes the growing kalo plants of the land. The ocean scene depicts the story of Kane huna moku, the floating islands that one sees when they ascend to heaven.
