‘I‘iwi birds are considered spiritual guides for families. Hawaiians considered their feathers to be symbols of power. Ali‘i (chiefs) chose the red and yellow feathers of the ‘i‘iwi to make their capes and crowns to represent the magnificence of their ‘aumakua.
Now at the risk of becoming extinct within the next 10 years, one can only find the ‘i‘wi on the island of Kauai in Hawai‘i.
